Kiwanis Club Montreal Certificates of Merit “Band Boy” MF – 12/23/1938; Certificate of Merit – 12/15/1941. Maynard loved to show these awards to everyone. He loved being in the Kiwanis Boy’s Club and kept the certificates on his office wall at home. When Maynard was about eight years old his father found out that the local Kiwanis boys club was going to have a band for underprivileged boys. Maynard’s father went and asked if his two sons could play with the band, but because they were not “underprivileged” MF’s father insisted on paying for both of his son’s uniforms and instruments. The two boys were accepted, and this was the beginning of Maynard’s recognition. The certificate is signed by Capt. H.G. Jones, a man who would go on to have a profound effect on Maynard’s life. Capt. HG Jones discovered Maynard at The Kiwanis Club, and by the age of 10, Maynard was the (lead) trumpet and mascot for the military band, marching out in front of the band and playing powerful trumpet leads whilst marching for miles in freezing temperatures. Maynard recalled that Capt. HG Jones was probably the best teacher he ever had. Many, including Maynard, guess that this is where he got his powerful stamina.

Dizzy Gillespie mute in original case with handwritten note from Dizzy to Maynard giving it as gift.
Dear Maynard,
This is the only one I have besides the one I use. But I can’t find the felt tip, nor the cup that goes in the end. I think Giardinelli can fix it.
Much love Dizzy
